Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
Summer 2024
Have you ever noticed how different we all look? God created us with different colored skin, hair, and eyes. Some of us are right-handed and others are left-handed. Some can roll their tongues and others can’t. Some people are musical and some are athletic. Some find their schoolwork easy, and others have to work extra hard.
God created beautiful diversity in our world, but some of the things that make us different might be seen as difficulties. Some people wear glasses to see better; some need wheelchairs to move around, while others get their food through special tubes that go into their stomachs, and some use pictures or sign language to communicate! Did you know that God created each of us with all the features and abilities that He wanted us to have? He didn’t make any mistakes.
In John 9, we read about a man who had been blind all his life. When Jesus’ disciples met him, they immediately assumed that he was blind because he or his parents had sinned. But Jesus quickly told His disciples that this man’s blindness was not because of sin, but because God was going to show His wonderful works through this man’s life. Jesus miraculously healed his eyes and saved his soul that day, and many people witnessed the power of God and saw this man worshipping his Savior. God used this man’s physical difference to bring glory to His name and to show others what God could do.
As you play or travel this summer, you might meet people who look different or who act differently from you. How should you react to them and treat them? The Bible gives us wonderful truths and commands to help us know how to treat others.
First, we can praise and thank God for His amazing creation and for the way He has made us and everyone else in this world unique. We can say with David in Psalm 139, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Second, we should remember that everyone we meet is created in God’s image. Genesis 1:27 says that “God created man in his own image . . . male and female created he them.” This doesn’t mean that we look like God physically, but God did give us some of His characteristics such as the ability to think, love, and show mercy.
Since everyone is made in God’s image, everyone is to be valued and treated with respect. The apostle Paul reminds us, “Be ye kind one to another”( Ephesians 4:32). Always, always be kind! A hurtful word can cause so much pain and sadness that can last for a long time, but a kind word or action shows God’s love to others.
Finally, tell others about Jesus! Each person we meet needs the Lord Jesus as his or her Savior. God doesn’t prefer people because they have particular looks, features, or abilities. Romans 3:23 tells us that “all have sinned.” Everyone needs to hear about Christ’s work on the cross to deal with sin.
As you think about how God created you with your unique qualities and how God created everyone just the way He wanted them to be, remember to glorify God with your life. “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
