Are You a Good Listener?
Winter 2022
Do you remember the story of the boy Samuel in the Old Testament? Three times he thought Eli the priest called him in the night, so he ran to see what he wanted. But Eli hadn’t called him. Eli realized it was God who was calling Samuel, so he told him the next time he heard the voice, he should say, “Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth.” Can you imagine how excited Samuel must have been to know that God wanted to tell him something? He would have been eager to listen very carefully when the Lord spoke to him. Samuel went back to his bed and did what Eli told him to do, and God gave him a very important message.
Do you know that God has things to say to you too? Today God speaks to us through His Word. As we read His Word and as we hear it preached, we learn who God is and what His will is for us. Those are the most important things we can learn in life, so we should be eager to listen carefully when God’s Word is read and preached. What kind of a listener are you when you are in church? Do you find it hard to pay attention sometimes? Many people find it helpful to take notes during a church service. You may have thought that was something only grownups do, but you can do it too. Try using a note-taking sheet like the one on this page to help you.
